Speaking with my “Graphic Artist” hat on; Yeah, James does do a fair job with the album artwork although I think I need to talk to him about his typography selections sometimes…
Colours: Bold colours are the key. Also using complementary colours–try to use only 2 or 3 colours max. Avoid very thin lines.
Text: Avoid anything too text-heavy. Sans serif fonts (like Arial) look better than serif fonts (like Times New Roman) at smaller sizes. Avoid any font that’s too “fancy”. Remember that small text is not going to be seen when the art is shrunk down to 72 px so the most important text (like the show’s name) should be largest and anything tiny will likely be ignored.
Images: Avoid buying any stock image that’s been bought a thousand times already, look for something that’s unique or draw something yourself (or draw something yourself and ask a pro to fix it for you). Choose “simple” images over “complex” ones.
